Each star on the sidewalk carries a brass emblem that shows its category, so the category can be read at a glance without looking the name up. The official Walk of Fame Directory lists the category in each honoree’s entry, next to the street address and ceremony date.

Recent entries, such as Lea Salonga’s, use the name Live Performance. Muhammad Ali’s star, mounted on a wall at 6801 Hollywood Blvd, is also listed under Live Performance.

How categories shape selection

Nominations are considered once a year by a committee of Walk of Famers, with each category represented, normally at a June meeting. About two dozen to 30 names are selected a year across all six. Stars are awarded by category, so one person can hold stars in more than one, as Gene Autry does. The how-to-get-a-star page sets out the full process.

The newest category is already on the calendar: Orel Hershiser’s Sports Entertainment star at 6755 Hollywood Blvd was unveiled on 13 August 2026. Television had two entries in the same stretch of the 2026 schedule, Greg Daniels on 10 September and Bradley Whitford, scheduled for 30 September.

Gene Autry across five categories

Gene Autry is the only person with five stars, according to the official site. His entries are Radio at 6520, Recording at 6384, Television at 6667, Motion Pictures at 6644 and Live Performance at 7000 Hollywood Blvd. That covers every category except Sports Entertainment. The Television star is outside Musso & Frank Grill, and the Live Performance star is at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.

A tribute filed under Television

The four circular moon monuments at Hollywood and Vine (6200 Hollywood Blvd) were awarded in the Television category "as a tribute to the first televised Walk on the Moon", in the official site’s words. Dedicated on 20 July 1973, they name Neil A. Armstrong, Edwin E. Aldrin Jr. and Michael Collins and carry the date 7/20/69. They are among the entries described on the unusual stars page.
